Multi-disciplinary intelligence collection is a function of an intelligence unit in which a single group of collectors are utilized to collect materials on multiple areas of interest to the intelligence community. The collection method is designed to provide an economic solution by attempting to answer tasking requests on a wide-ranging list of subject areas. The collectors are usually generalists, as compared to subject matter experts. The Multi-Disciplinary Intelligence Collection Report is generated in the last mission phase, Prosecution and Asset Recovery, as shown in the digram.
The multi-disciplinary intelligence collection function is designed to promote the expeditious screening of multiple personnel. During the screening, intelligence agents question and identify individuals with knowledge that may be of value to the intelligence unit.
After questioning, those identified with knowledge are then classified as to their:
- Area(s) of knowledge
- Level of knowledge in each specific area
- Anticipated level of cooperation and deception
- Motives for assisting law enforcement
The purpose of this collection method is to:
- Allow a limited number of collectors to collect basic materials on multiple criminal subject areas from multiple persons
- Identify sources with varying knowledge in one or more specific areas, which should be developed further by intelligence subject matter experts
A multi-disciplinary intelligence collection agent may interview persons from various sources. These individuals may include:
- People charged with a crime who may be considered for a plea agreement
- People recently incarcerated and wanting to “make a deal”
- People who may knowingly or unknowingly have knowledge of criminal activities
